Detectives Investigate Inmate Death; Does Not Appear Suspicious in Nature (26-059)
PINELLAS COUNTY – Detectives assigned to the Robbery & Homicide Unit are investigating the death of 28-year-old Robert Sunmonu.
Detectives say Sunmonu was booked into the Pinellas County Jail on May 13, 2026, on a Federal Marshal Hold.
According to detectives, Sunmonu had documented preexisting medical conditions, and on July 3, 2026, at approximately 11:30 a.m., Sunmonu was found unresponsive in his cell. Deputies and medical staff performed life-saving measures until paramedics arrived. Sunmonu was pronounced deceased at 12:37 p.m.
At this point in the investigation, detectives have found no evidence that Sunmonu sustained any injuries which may have contributed to his death while incarcerated at the jail.
Sunmonu’s next of kin has been notified.
The investigation continues.
