Deputies Investigate Fatal Boat Accident North of the Dunedin Causeway (24-149)

PINELLAS COUNTY – On November 27, 2024, at approximately 11:40 a.m., deputies responded to a water rescue call approximately 2 miles north of the Dunedin Causeway in the Intercoastal Waterway.

According to deputies, 66-year-old Charles Barnes and William Coughenour were fishing on Coughenour’s 17-foot Key West boat near 3 Rooker Island. Coughenour was driving the boat, while Barnes sat at the boat's bow on top of a cooler. Deputies say Coughenour removed his hand from the steering wheel to fix a fishing pole, when the boat pulled a hard right and both were ejected into the water. Coughenour was able to swim back to the boat, however, the boat ran over Barnes’ body, and his right arm was caught in the motor's propellers, submerging him underwater. Coughenour attempted to assist Barnes out of the water but was unable to. Coughenour flagged down nearby boaters, who called 911. Barnes was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Through the course of the investigation, deputies determined nothing suspicious was observed and impairment was not a factor in the incident.

Next of kin was notified.

The investigation continues.
